Etching Basics

The NPW Newcastle Printmakers Workshop is Australias longest running open access workshops, established in 1979, and provides local practicing artists, students and beginners with access to equipment and work space. There are approximately 80 members and we run a variety of workshops and exhibitions each year.Ticket Policy:Most classes require a minimum number of participants to go ahead. This depends on a number of factors and the minimum is stated on the individual workshop booking page. In the event of the workshop being cancelled, your booking will be refunded in full.  In the case of you not being able to attend a workshop you will be refunded as follows:Cancellations less than 24 hours before and no-shows on the day will not be refunded and a credit or transfer will not be issued.Cancellations within 1 week will receive a 35% refund.Cancellations between 1 and 2 weeks of the workshop will receive a 50% refund.Cancellations more than two weeks before the workshop receive a full refund less any third party booking fee.If Newcastle Printmakers, or the student, has to cancel due to Covid lock downs enforced after booking, a refund will be issued. This may be for a whole course, if there is more than one class in the course, dependant upon whether the course has started. For example if we go into lock down part way through a 5 week workshop a pro rata refund will be issued. Alternatively the student may chose to retain a credit for a future course with Newcastle Printmakers.

Newcastle Printmakers Workshop

<DIV><SPAN>In this one day workshop using zinc plates and copper sulphate participants will learn how to prepare their plates, apply a hard ground and achieve tone using spray paint as an aquatint. By the end of the course everyone should have created a zinc plate with an image and have printed it intaglio ready for framing. Some materials will be provided. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience.</SPAN></DIV>

<DIV><SPAN>NB A further course is scheduled for Sunday 2nd June where participants will be able to extend their knowledge with multiple printing, chine colle, stencils and sugar lift.</SPAN></DIV>

<DIV><SPAN>Etching is a rich medium where an image is scratched, drawn or painted onto a metal plate and the image etched into the plate. A range of marks can be created and, after etching, ink is applied to the plate. A print is created by placing dampened paper onto the plate and passing both through a press.</SPAN></DIV>

<DIV><SPAN>About your tutor: Amanda Donohue studied printmaking at Sydney College of the Arts graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours). She has been a printmaker for over twenty years, specialising in etching but also interested in lino, dry point, screen printing and collagraphs.
