Overview

Chiltern Senior Citizens Hall

Join author Georgina Phelan as she discusses the life of Chiltern local Ellen Byron (nee Salisbury), her relationship with Kelly Gang member, Joe Byrne and the important role she played within the Kelly story in the 1870s.

This special presentation will highlight Ellen’s early life in the nearby mining township of Sebastopol as well as the risks she took in order to keep the outlaws sheltered and fed, through her marriage to Martin Byron and relocation to Chiltern, where she lived and raised a family on the Black Dog Creek. Ellen’s was a story of resilience and strength, despite the challenges she faced as a woman living in 19th century rural Victoria.

Georgina will also be discussing her books, including the biography, Joseph Byrne: From Larrikin to Outlaw, as well as her creative non-fiction works, Ah Nam, The Cow from El Dorado, and Blood and Bamboo, and Ellen’s role within them.
