Elizabethan Gems // featuring Josie and the Emeralds
Event Information
About this event
Come enjoy an hour of music from the time of Queen Elizabeth I, and learn more about the historical instruments on which they were played! Performed by critically acclaimed chamber group Josie and the Emeralds, this special performance features Josie Ryan (soprano) with Brooke Green, Fiona Ziegler, and Catherine Upex, some of Australia's finest viol players.
Elizabeth I was an accomplished player on lute and virginals, a skilled dancer, a lover of ostentatious jewellery and had a penchant for emeralds. But Elizabeth was also careful to fashion her image as politically harmonious, attributing the rationality of music-making as symbolic of her unquestionable authority. Elizabeth conversed in Spanish, French, and Italian; and this program includes music she may have heard from those countries.
