About this Event
#DryLabsDownUnder is an ideas exchange forum. Join us on Friday 4th December at 1pm AEDT, (10am, AWST) for an online meeting where we will discuss colleagues experiences of developing online laboratories, online assessments and creating a social environment for students to engage with staff and their peers.
Title: Using technology to teach online real practicals (applied to HPLC)
Dr Laurence Orlando (Monash University)
In second semester 2020, all the practicals got cancelled due to the COVID lockdown. The idea was to use the Virtual Lab to replace the practicals but I started to use Microsoft Teams and discovered (by discussing with the students) that Teams allowed to remotely control any computer connected to Teams. And the idea of the online real prac from anywhere in the world was born. We had 3 Teaching Assistants in the room connecting to Teams and then the students from all over the world requested control and as the HPLC are mainly operated with the software, the students could do their experiments as if they had been in the lab. The learning curve was quite steep for the whole team but the students recognised the benefits of the program and it was the only unit to run all the intended practicals. This opens a really interesting door regarding potential training online in the future
Details of the online link will be sent on to registered people via email a day before the meeting.
