Drinks Al Desko: science communication with comics artist Stuart McMillen

Want an excuse to skip work early on Friday? Join ASC Canberra as we crash the workplace of a local science communicator for Drinks Al Desko. Learn about science communication, while enjoying drinks and nibbles with other SciCommers.

Cartoonist Stuart McMillen will discuss how he uses intriguing real-life historical events, such as published science experiments, as the basis of his non-fiction comics.

In his talk, Stuart will share some of the methods that he uses as a comics artist to communicate information visually. Stuart will describe the broader science communication principles that sit behind his work, and how they can be applied by communicators generally.

As part of this 'meet the members'-style event, Stuart McMillen will give a short tour of his Gorman Arts Centre studio and demonstrate the way that he creates his comics using a digital graphics tablet and stylus.

Running order:

5:00 pm - arrival and refreshments
5:15 pm - Stuart McMillen slideshow talk and audience Q&A - E Block meeting room
6:00 pm - tour of art studio by Stuart McMillen
6:15 pm - continuation of refreshments, mingling
6:30 pm or so - end of event

Cost: free for Australian Science Communicators members. $10 for non-members.
Where: E Block meeting room of Gorman Arts Centre, Braddon. Paid parking is available on Batman Street (spaces are often at a premium: allow extra arrival time!)
