Drawing as Witness - Charcoal Drawing Workshop

Drawing as Witness - Charcoal Drawing Workshop

15-85 Gladstone StSouth Melbourne, VIC
Sunday, Jan 11, 2026 from 3 pm to 5 pm AEDT
Overview

Join artist Gerard Russo for a gentle introduction to observational drawing.

Drawing as Witness invites participants of any level to slow down and engage in the act of seeing and recording what is in front of us.

Held in a relaxed yet intentional environment under the guidance of artist Gerard Russo, the workshop focuses on drawing as both observation and translation through mark, learning to look with care, to notice more, and to respond through the hand using practical ideas and techniques.

Working with one of the most versatile and expressive mediums — charcoal — participants will explore how gesture, perception, and mark intersect. Through a series of guided exercises, you’ll learn to narrow your focus, tune into subtle shifts of tone and form, and build confidence in translating what you see into image while reinforcing your artistic voice.

What to Expect

  • A gentle introduction to observational drawing
  • Techniques for focusing perception and simplifying form
  • Guided mark-making exercises using willow and compressed charcoal, and other tools
  • Realtime and post drawing reflection and discussion on process and perception

All materials are provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own. No prior experience is required — just bring curiosity, a steady breath, and a willingness to look.

$60 Per person

Includes all materials, wine and refreshments.

Events are designed to be inclusive and welcoming to all visitors.

• Wheelchair accessible
• Low-sensory / relaxed environment
• Seating available
• Accessible bathroom
