Local researcher Mary Healy shares insights on this remarkable man. From impoverished conditions in Ireland, Heffernan travelled the world seeking a better life for his family. After finding gold in California, he sailed to Victoria, seeking further fortune. He established The Shamrock Hotel with his 30-year tenure mirroring the rise of Sandhurst as the world's richest goldfields.
