PROFESSOR DAVID ARNOTT

Behavioral Economics in Information Systems Research

Historically, much of information systems (IS) research has been concerned with decision making in some way. Decision theory can be broadly divided into focused economic theory and the mainly descriptive behavioral theory. Currently the dominant theory on how humans make decisions comes from behavioral economics. A relatively new economics field, behavioral economics has received three Nobel Prizes, the latest in 2017. Despite this prominence, the adoption of behavioral economics theory in IS research has been slow. Further, some of the decision-making theory that is used in IS research is of questionable validity. IS as a discipline may be subject to foundation theory inertia and greater attention on the scientific status of foundation theory is warranted. This paper attempts to address this issue in the decision-making arena by first providing a review of the behavioral economics of decision making and then by investigating the use of this theory in IS research to date. The paper then develops a framework for using behavioral economics in future IS research. In this way, the paper aims to influence IS research agendas and designs.
