Diana Doherty is widely regarded as one of the most talented Australian instrumentalists working today. Notable successes include performing Ross Edwards’ Concerto for Oboe with the New York, Liverpool and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestras and appearances with all the leading symphony orchestras in Australia and New Zealand, the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, St. Lawrence String Quartet, Musica Viva, Ensemble Kanazawa and the Seymour Group. Diana has also performed at numerous Australian and international music festivals including Queensland Music Festival, Four Winds Festival, the Australian Chamber Music Festival (Townsville), the Prague Spring Festival, MusicaRiva Festival (Italy), Bratislava Music Festival (Slovakia) and the Young Artist in Concert Festival (Switzerland).
As Artist in Focus, Diana features across the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s (CSO) 2019 season – in recital, as a concert soloist, in the Australian Series, and as both soloist and director for the Canberra Weekly Classic Afternoon. Diana performed Nigel Westlake’s Spirit of the Wild, an oboe concerto composed for her, at the CSO’s 2019 ActewAGL Llewellyn One concert. She premiered this work two years prior with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of David Robertson – the recording was released this year on the ABC Classics label.
This year, Diana also curates UKARIA 24, a weekend of chamber music in Adelaide, and appears as soloist with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and the Queensland and Sydney Symphony orchestras.
Diana has been Principal Oboe of the SSO since 1997, a position she held previously with the Symphony Orchestra of Lucerne from 1990 to 1997. Diana holds a Bachelor of Arts (Music Performance) from the Victorian College of the Arts, where she was awarded the M.E.N.S.A prize for top graduating student. During this time, she also won the ‘Other Instruments’ category of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition and was named ‘Most Outstanding Competitor Overall’ for 1985.
Diana has also jointly won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York, and received first prize at Prague Spring Festival Competition, a MO award for Classical/Opera performer of the year and an Aria for her performance of the Ross Edwards’ Concerto for Oboe.
Diana appears on a number of recordings, including Spirit of the Wild (Westlake) with SSO; concertos by Haydn, Mozart, Martinu and Zimmerman with the Symphony Orchestra of Lucerne; Romantic Oboe Concertos with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, under Werner Andreas Albert; Blues for DD, a recital programme of folk and jazz influenced works with pianist David Korevaar; Souvenirs; Ross Edwards’ Oboe Concerto with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Arvo Volmer; Carl Vine’s Oboe Concerto with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra; Bach’s Concerto for violin and oboe with Richard Tognetti and the ACO; Works for oboe and oboe d’amore by JS Bach with Ironwood and Linda Kent; and Koehne’s Inflight Entertainment.
