Event description

Description

Can paying attention to our gut health help prevent, cure or better manage type 1 & type 2 diabetes, including those linked to statin medication?

Join WA experts as they share their insights on:

Type 2 Diabetes & The Gut

Professor Fergal O’Gara from Curtin University

Modern medicine and health care practices are being transformed by the realisation that our health and disease status can be strongly influenced by the population of microorganisms that inhabit our gut (referred to as our microbiome).

Professor O’Gara will discuss how nutrition and therapeutics such as statins may influence the microbiome with follow-on consequences for maintaining the balance between health and the onset of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes & The Gut

Professor Liz Davis from Perth Children’s Hospital

Professor Davis will shed light on a research project happening in Perth as part of the national The Environmental Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity (ENDIA) Study. The research is investigating if the bacteria in a mother’s digestive system can influence the health of babies, including whether or not they develop chronic conditions such as type 1 diabetes.

Professor Davis is a Paediatric Endocrinologist, Head of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Perth Children's Hospital and a Telethon Kids Institute Senior Clinical Lecturer.

Food & Gut Health

Professor Amanda Devine from Edith Cowan University

Professor Devine, Edith Cowan University’s Professor of Public Health and Nutrition in the School of Medical and Health Sciences, will discuss how patterns of eating impact gut health, chronic disease and wellbeing.

She is also co-author of Gut Feeling: Mindful Menus for the Microbiome.

and...

Meet Jamie Cripps from the West Coast Eagles

Jamie Cripps has generously given up his time to be at our event signing autographs from 11.45am to midday! So come on down and have a chat with him about living with type 1 diabetes as an elite footballer.
