The University of Sydney, in partnership with the NSW Smart Sensing Network, will be hosting an industry seminar with Genesys Electronics

This seminar will be delivered via a Zoom meeting.
The University of Sydney, in partnership with the NSW Smart Sensing Network (www.nssn.org.au), will be hosting an industry seminar with Genesys Electronics Design (https://www.genesysdesign.com.au). The seminar will cover two main topics and for each part of the seminar, there will be a 15-minute Q&amp;A session. There will be a 30-minute break between the two topics.
1.	Smart devices for general use
The process of translating technologies with embedded electronics into commercially scalable products, ready for global distribution, can be full of pitfalls. Challenges include the myriad of regulations and RF options in multiple jurisdictions, understanding certification processes, designing electronics hardware for manufacturability, aligning maintainable firmware and data models with robust software engineering methods, and keeping up with the rapidly growing range of IoT technology options. Inattention to detail in any one of these areas can lead to design and manufacturing flaws that can delay product delivery with significantly increased cost.
This part of the seminar introduces the commercialisation of electronics hardware and associated software. The key takeaway will be an appreciation of the importance of early engagement with an experienced commercial electronics designer and what information you need to exchange with them to smooth the product development process.
2.	Smart devices for medical use
The development of medical technologies with embedded electronics involves a far greater regulatory burden than most other devices. The process of taking a concept through to a commercially scalable product, ready for global distribution, is full of pitfalls. A key challenge is the mandatory requirement for user needs, traceability of any software developed, as well as demonstrating both the electrical safety and essential performance of the device. While many have a theoretical knowledge of the full gamut of regulatory requirements, only an experienced commercial electronics designer understands how this translates into scalable and manufacturable designs for embedded hardware and software.
This topic introduces the commercialisation of electronic medical devices, with a focus on how the regulations relate to engineering design processes. The key takeaway will be an appreciation of the commercial imperatives you need to consider early in the product development process.
About the presenter: Geoff Sizer is the CEO of Genesys Electronics Design – a design house specialising in the development of smart electronic devices leveraging the Internet of Things technologies. The company has developed a system of modularised software and hardware that can be tailored to any application.
