Event description

Description

In this fun, hands-on workshop you will find out how plant choices are important in designing an effective garden.

We will be considering how plants can be used in garden designs to create a feel, a look and to give your garden personality.

In this workshop you will learn about:

Garden structure - the ‘feel’ of the garden.

We have all walked into a garden and thought “Wow, this garden feels really good”.

What is it that makes a garden feel good? How do you create that “aahhh” factor? How do we use plants in our designs to help to create this feeling?

Garden character - the ‘look’ of the garden.

There are the plants that create a garden’s style – the look of the garden.

Is this garden of good character? It is more than just a pretty space!

Garden personality - the ‘detail’ of the garden

How do you create personality in a garden? It is all about you!

We will consider how we utilise feature plants - the pots and pops of colour. For example; a weeping rose blushing in the corner; seasonal feature plants; an autumn shrub; highly perfumed flowers and leaves; the special plants you wait for – the ones that create anticipation.

Other considerations you will discuss in Designing with Plants are:

  • Aspect and access: How do I create shade, shelter and privacy?
  • The ratio of space: How wide do I make that garden bed?
  • Aesthetics: How do I combine colours and textures while also considering light and balance?
  • Productive plants for harvesting.
  • Plants and ecology: attracting birds and butterflies.
  • Artistry and personifying a garden: making it yours!
