Dental Radiography For Vets And Nurses - AM Session
A comprehensive, skills-focused workshop designed to enhance capability in acquiring high-quality diagnostic dental radiographs.
Half-day Workshop open to Veterinarians, Veterinary Nurses & Technicians
Morning session: 8:00 am - 12:00 noon AEDT
Facilitator: Maggie Burley
Cert IV VN, Dip VN (Dental), VTS (Dentistry), TAE
Accurate diagnosis of oral conditions requires a comprehensive examination supported by high-quality diagnostic radiographs.
The absence of standardised, competency-based education in dental radiography has led to the misconception that simply capturing an image of a tooth is sufficient for diagnosis—when in reality this is far from true. Producing diagnostic-quality images can be challenging due to variations in patient anatomy—such as brachycephaly or missing dentition—combined with the complexity of radiographic geometry. Furthermore, introducing dental radiography into practice often results in longer procedure times, increased anaesthesia duration and added stress for the veterinary healthcare team.
This hands-on workshop will equip attendees with the skills to assess the diagnostic quality of dental radiographs, perform complete radiographic surveys in both feline and canine patients, and identify common errors in dental imaging. Participants will learn a streamlined technique to consistently produce diagnostic-quality images while completing full-mouth surveys efficiently.
Attendees will also develop the ability to troubleshoot images in real time and apply corrective strategies for common radiographic errors. Collaboration is emphasised to ensure clear communication between Veterinarians and Veterinary Nurses & Technicians in achieving the required diagnostic views. Additionally, the training covers software features that support accurate image interpretation, leading to improved patient outcomes and reduced stress for the team.
This workshop is suitable for all experience levels—from beginners to seasoned professionals—seeking to expand their skills and confidence in dental radiography.
Key Learning Areas:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
· Produce diagnostic dental radiographs using a variety of techniques
· Complete an initial full-mouth radiographic survey in cats and dogs
· Identify common imaging errors and apply corrective strategies
· Utilise tube-shift and other advanced techniques to obtain additional views
· Communicate effectively to ensure required diagnostic images are achieved
· Improve workflow and efficiency in dental radiography
