To celebrate the 25-year anniversary of iconic Australian singer-songwriter Deborah Conway’s platinum release String of Pearls, Conway will perform the entire album for Fremantle audiences, as well as launching new album, Everybody’s Begging, with long-time collaborator Willy Zygier.
A full band of Australia’s finest musicians bring the classic record to life, including Niko Schauble, Clio Renner (RocKwiz) & Simon Starr. Its themes of youthful reflection and tongue-in-cheek irreverence, embodied in hits such as It's Only The Beginning, Release Me and the bittersweet title track, earned Conway the 1992 Best Female ARIA Award, and the record occupies an essential and enduring place in Australian music. The String of Pearls release was accompanied by an extensive tour with band The Mothers of Pearl, in which Willy Zygier played guitar. This was the start of a highly successful song-writing and personal collaboration for Conway and Zygier, which has resulted so far in nine records and three children.
String of Pearls was only the beginning of a wonderful, varied solo career, and that’s how this special concert will end; to open, Conway and Zygier perform their ninth and latest album, Everybody’s Begging, the follow-up to their wildly acclaimed 2013 release, Stories of Ghosts. Once again Conway and Zygier traverse an emotional landscape of ideas that demands attention and receives it in the form of toe-tapping compulsion and full-bodied swooning.
"There is something sublimely distinctive about Deborah Conway. It is her voice, her songwriting, her attitude. It is a challenge to find any musical work Conway has been involved with that isn't simply magnificent." - Sydney Morning Herald
"If there was ever an Australian act that could be said to have maintained professional integrity alongside lyrical honesty in the wake of mainstream commercial popularity, Deborah Conway is easily that artist." - Faster Louder
"Listen to this with open ears and mind. If Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen delivered an album with songs as good as these, the critical response would be rapturous. Conway and Zygier deserve no less." - Courier Mail
"The latest offering from the Conway-Zygier team is simply outstanding." - Canberra Times
"There was hardly a whisper to be heard from the crowd during any of the songs. A rare delight at concerts these days, and I put it down to how intently the crowd was listening." - Faster Louder
