Description

Daytime Art: Developing Your Drawing Skills with Judi Power Thompson

Thursdays > 10:00am – 12:30pm
Term 1 | 21 February – 11 April

It is an absolute joy to be able to pick up a pencil and draw something that looks like what it is supposed to look like. It is not always a natural talent, but a skill you can easily learn, such as developing your observational power, having an eye for detail and learning to fully concentrate – hard in today’s busy world. Learning to recognise proportions, handling dark areas and even deciding which lines will stay, which will go and which shading technique you find easiest are all easily learned with the personal guidance you will get in this course. Good drawing is at the very core of most paintings; Michelangelo and Picasso are good examples, as they both drew with precision and perfection in their early days.

This course aims to teach you the disciplines required for accurate interpretation of a subject, using primarily lead pencil. The course will cover simple line drawing, quality of line, handling negative space as well as various shading techniques. Personal instruction will be given on selecting a focal point, accuracy of observation, details and tonal values. Demonstrations will be given on the use of graphite (lead pencil), coloured pencil and charcoal while keeping in mind the overall composition and design of your work. There is a lot to cover in this course and class time is often insufficient so you will be expected to complete works at home during the week, ready for a critique at the beginning of the next lesson.

Learning how to really observe the subject then drawing flat and curved surfaces using a box-like object and a sphere. Both flat and curved surfaces appear in most things you will ever draw.

8 Mar:
Drawing three versions of your own hand, two holding an object, both in line and using shading.

15 Mar:
Bringing an object from home, creating a pleasing composition to create an interesting drawing.

22 Mar:
Working from your own photograph, drawing a person, bird, animal or the family pet, concentrating on facial features, expression, shading and techniques for drawing fur and feathers.
