Description

CUTPIECE Workshop 1

"Create a unique, circular designed drawstring backpack from your favourite A.BCH offcut materials (intermediate - requires a basic level of cutting and prior knowledge of machine sewing)"

CUTPIECE : a piece of cloth, usually the last piece left from a bale ( a long, rolledpiece of cloth); a remnant.

CUTPIECE is a series of up-cycling workshops created by A.BCH to coincide with Fashion Revolution Week. Participants are invited into the A.BCH studio to make a new item from old clothing, off-cuts or salvaged materials. You will be able to choose your own adventure and skill level by joining one or both of our workshops to be held during Fashion Revolution Week (April 23-29, 2018).

The Workshop:

One of the questions we get asked at A.BCH HQ is "what happens to our off-cut materials?" Considering the industry statistics that 20% of fabric ends up as waste on the cutting room floor, we have been attempting to solve this issue in a few ways. One is to create new styles from off-cuts (like our A.08 Zero Waste Tee). Another is by saving all our off-cuts (big and small) and slowly re-joining them to create new sheets of unique fabric. Because all our fabric is lush, we don't want to waste it so it makes sense for us to find creative ways to use it again.

This workshop utilises the A.BCH cutting floor fabrics, to create an easy-to-make, drawstring backpack that will be a one-off design due to the cutpiece nature of the recreated fabrics. Participants will cut and sew their very own, totally unique bag and be able to choose from a variety of weights, colours and fibres. We will provide the pattern and show you how to cut and sew the bag so you can walk out with a ready-to-use backpack. If it sounds complicated, it isn't really! We are here to show you how. The workshop will require basic cutting and requires some prior knowledge of machine sewing.

What to Bring:

1 x Domestic sewing machine (no machine? rent one of ours on the day, limited qty available, or have one of our expert sewers do the sewing bit for you)

What we Provide:

Full supervision and instructions for cutting and sewing the bag during the workshop
Materials (all A.BCH fabrics and threads are biodegradable or recyclable)
Light refreshments (champagne / beer / snacks)
Access to our studio facilities and components including cutting tables, scissors, organic cotton threads, machinery (optional extra)
1 x Entry for lucky door prize (Fashion Revolution Zine 2nd Edition + A.BCH handmade mending kit)

Optional Extra:

Stay back for the final CUTPIECE Workshop to embellish your freshly made bag and get the second workshop 1/2 price.

Note: This event is non-refundable due to the very limited numbers we are able to take. Therefore, any un-redeemed or no-show tickets will be donated to Fashion Revolution Australia New Zealand.

The CUTPIECE series for Fashion Revolution includes the following workshops:

1. Create a drawstring backpack from your favourite offcut materials (intermediate - requires a basic level of cutting and machine sewing skills)

2. Customise your own signature A.BCH tote bag (or BYO, or use the backpack created in Workshop 1) with patches, salvaged trims and old garments (beginner - requires simple cutting and hand sewing / embroidery)
