Cultural Tour: Wil-im-ee Mooring (Mount William)

Experience the history of Wil-im-ee Moor-ring on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country with a Wurundjeri Elder.

This event is a rare and special opportunity to visit this National Heritage Listed site with a Wurundjeri Elder.

Wil-im-ee Moor-ring (Mount William) is a large quarry for greenstone near Lancefield in Wurundjeri Country.

The greenstone hatchet heads from Wil-im-ee Moor-ring (Woi-wurrung for tomahawk place) were highly sought after.

Aboriginal people travelled great distances for Mount William greenstone hatchets, bringing with them the possum skin, cloaks and wooden spears necessary to trade for the hatchets. As a result, Wil-im-ee Moor-ring became one of the largest and most intensively-worked quarry sites in southeast Australia.

Good to know:

• There is minimal parking on the site, so we will meet at Lancefield Neighbourhood House at 9:30am to arrange car pooling.
• Arrive at Lancefield Neighbourhood House no later than 9:30am. The drive to site is almost 20 minutes. We expect to be arriving back at 1pm.
• The event will include a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, before the guided tour.
• This is a free event, but places are limited.
• Bring a water bottle and suitable clothing for the weather. Sturdy shoes are required as the walk will involve some off-track and rocky sections.
• There are no toilet facilities on site.
