A key priority for the Mining & Quarrying Occupational Health and Safety team and ReturnToWork SA is providing training and support to industries exposed to Silica, to prevent injury and illness, and provide early intervention support.

Delivered by WHS Specialist and subject matter expert, Jack Crawford of the MAQOHSC team, this training will highlight an employers legal responsibilities in relation to Respirable Crystalline Silica and provide practical guidance.

• Health risks associated with exposure to RCS
• Workplace Exposure Standards
• Materials containing silicon dioxide (silica) and how they cause silicosis
• How RCS is generated during processing
• What is ‘controlled’ processing of CSS
• The requirements for the controls listed in subsection 529B(1)(b)
• Developing a crystalline silica substance (CSS) risk assessment and control plan
• Compliance with a silica risk control plan
• Silica dust exposure reduction interventions in the construction sector
• Determining when air monitoring may be required
• Providing the regulator with results of any air monitoring undertaken
