Where our stories come aliveThe National Museum of Australia brings to life the rich and diverse stories of Australia through compelling objects, ideas and events. Our exhibitions, collections, programs and research focus on three interrelated themes; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture, Australia’s history and society since 1788, and  the interaction of people with the environment.  These define our conceptual framework through the themes of; land, nation, and people.

<p>Join senior First Nations artists from Far North Queensland and the Torres Strait for a hands-on creative workshop. Using both traditional and contemporary techniques, craft woven jewellery and wearable art pieces that are an exploration of connection, memory and place.</p><p>The workshop will feature a variety of materials and we encourage you to bring your own found and collected items to incorporate into your artwork.</p><p>*Costs apply. Spaces are limited.</p><p><br></p><h3>About the artists</h3><h4>Margaret Mara</h4><p>As a mother of nine and grandmother to fifteen, Margaret Mara’s painting ability is matched by her talent for time management. Working in her own contemporary style Margaret draws inspiration from her life experience, the environment, family stories and living in the Cape.</p><p><br></p><h4>Sandra Ase</h4><p>Sandra Ase’s art explores her deep connection to her home of Mapoon and how she and her family maintain their relationship to it. She uses pattern and abstraction to tell stories of connection, creation and caring for Country, her children, grandchildren and others.</p><p><br></p><h4>Laura de Jersey</h4><p>Laura de Jersey is an emerging artist from Mapoon now living and working on her father’s country in the Torres Strait. Laura comes from an intensely creative family and was inspired to explore visual art by her mother, senior Mapoon artist Margaret Mara.
