Coolamons by the Water: A Weaving Gathering at Lake Ginnindera

Join Wiradjuri weaver, Jessika Spencer, beside Lake Ginnindera and learn how to weave your very own coolamon

This interactive workshop is a hands on coolamon weaving workshop set on the calming edges of Lake Ginninderra. It's open to both Indigneous and non-Indigneous participants. In this immersive cultural experience, workshop attenees will learn the foundations of coolamon weaving using contemporary, sustainable materials.

A coolamon is a traditional carrying vessel, symbolising care, nourishment and the strength of women’s cultural labour. This workshop invites participants to connect to Country, and learn the significance of cultural objects that have carried generations.

The workshop opens with an Acknowledgement of Country and a short storytelling session about coolamons, including Jessika’s connection to the Western Riverina and how weaving shapes identity and resilience today.

Participants will be guided step by step through:

· Selecting fibres and understanding their purposes

· Shaping the coolamon form

· Binding and reinforcing the structure

· Finishing techniques to create a strong and beautiful vessel

All materials are provided. Beginners are very welcome and no prior weaving experience is required.

This event is set outdoors by Lake Ginninderra, offering a peaceful environment where participants can listen to Country, work with their hands, and reflect on how cultural practices endure across generations. Expect a gentle, grounding afternoon of making, sharing stories, and learning on Ngunnawal, Ngambri Country.
