Event description

Description

Many people experience the holiday season as stressful -- people are arguing and bickering, and it’s hard to connect with people in the way we long to. We just don't have a chance to get a word in about things that matter like climate change or refugees.

Others people experience the holiday season as boring -- people stay on superficial conversations meaning we never get to talk about our concerns regarding climate change, refugees or other things we care about deeply. While we may seem connected at a superficial level, we may not feel that we’re able to be our authentic selves.

Regardless of where we’re starting from, in this workshop we’ll develop skills to make the most of the holidays, to be ourselves, and to love the time we spend with friends and family. We’ll practice how to find an assertive middle ground between the two poles of stress and boredom, conflict and withdrawal. And we'll practice how to talk about the issues we care deeply about and maintain connection, including when we disagree with people.

In particular, we’ll develop skills around:

  • Understanding and using non-verbal communication

  • Developing a growth mindset in our relationships

  • Allowing others to trust that we’re listening to them

  • Getting people to want to listen to us

  • Better understanding and sympathising with ourselves

  • Finding out how to meet people where they are at

  • Hearing people in a deeper way than words allow

Many of the principles and skills that inform this workshop are based on Nonviolent Communication (NVC), a peacebuilding methodology developed by Dr Marshall Rosenberg, Clinical Psychologist. For more information on NVC feel free to check out this lecture

We will start at 9am sharp, so feel free to arrive a little early to get settled and find a cuppa.
