Conserving the Magenta Lilly Pilly

Conserving the Magenta Lilly Pilly

Overview

Discover Swansea's role in conserving the critically endangered Magenta Lilly Pilly through new genomics research.

Join us for an exciting talk on groundbreaking genomics research that has revealed Swansea's unique place in the conservation of Syzygium paniculatum (Magenta Lilly Pilly), a critically endangered native species.

Recent analysis has identified 12 distinct genetic lineages of Syzygium paniculatum (Magenta Lilly Pilly) across NSW, revealing that Swansea is home to a unique lineage found nowhere else in the world. This discovery places our local population among the species’ highest conservation priorities.

Guest speaker Luke Foster, from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, will share insights into:

· The genetic diversity and uniqueness of Swansea's Magenta Lilly Pilly population

· Key sites including the significant population at Salts Bay/Black Neds Walking Trail

· The updated Saving our Species conservation strategy

· How our community can contribute to protecting this rare genetic lineage

This is a free event but bookings are essential as numbers are limited. Preference will be given to currently active Lake Macquarie Landcare volunteers.
