Event description

Description

Join the Amnesty International Australia Gold Coast group at their community forum calling for Federal leadership to address the overrepresentation of Indigenous kids in Australian detention centres.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children make up half of all children in Australia’s youth detention centres, and as witnessed at Don Dale, are being mistreated in our youth justice system.

Every kid deserves to enjoy the freedom of childhood, surrounded by their family and community. No child should be behind bars, held in brutal conditions.

The release of the Northern Territory Royal Commission’s final report, due on November 17, provides a once in a generation opportunity for the Federal government to take a leadership role, and form a national plan of action to reduce the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids in detention, and create a fairer future for Indigenous kids.

The forum will educate and engage the public on the issue, featuring Indigenous and non-Indigenous speakers, including those with experience working in the youth justice system. A representative from the office Stephen Ciobo MP, member of the House of Representatives for the division of Moncrieff, will also attend.

All are welcome to attend!

Let’s work together to keep Indigenous kids out of detention, and in their communities.
