Our Code Using Robots 1: Geometry program is a fun, interactive, educational and introductory workshop to coding. Participants learn to code using a robot from the first workshop all-the-while solving problems and applying geometry and math fundamentals. Coding is fun but coding with robots add a new dimension to play learning. Together with the Sphero robot, participants explore shapes, sizes, angles and properties of space in the Geometry program, but not before learning about our three-dimensional world and how a compass and navigation works and how to use them.

The workshops are structured to ensure progressive learning and the application of new skills in each session. It is suitable for begineers aged 7 to 12. This program is offered in Term 1 on Saturday afternoons from 2:30PM to 3:30PM commencing 10 February, then 17 February, 24 February, 3 March, 10 March, 17 March & concluding on 24 March. (Note that the first session is 1.5 hours).

Our Code Using Robots 1: Geometry course is the first in a series of four modules that offer fun, interactive and educational coding workshops. Participants commence as beginners in the Geometry program and progress to Code Using Robots 2: Time Speed & Distance followed by the Code Using Robots: Explorers 1 and 2 programs. These programs are offered during school terms and generally over a period of seven weeks.

Our Code Using Robots program go beyond coding. The workshops were designed to emphasise, as well as assist participants to understand, the importance of math fundamentals and numbers. It also integrates Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts to school Learning Areas. Coding expose kids to logic, problem solving and critical thinking but more importantly teaches kids how to think; an important skill to learn in this digital age.

Week 1 (1.5 hours) - Introduction to block coding (VPL) and familiarisation with the robot and the App. Learning areas include coding, robot famialarisation, technology, spacial awareness, navigation, logic, math and geometry.

Week 2 to 5 - Coding activities and games with shapes. Each week introduces more complex shapes. Learning areas include logic, math, problem solving, physics and computer science concepts.

Week 6 & 7 - Problem solving more complex shapes and coding a simple track in readiness for the next module. Learning areas include physics and computer science and engineering concepts.

Parents are encouraged to attend with their children but not essential. Each participant is assigned an individual robot to use during the workshops. Learning materials are provided. Workshops are limited to 12 participants.

All workshops are facilitated by professionals with a STEM background.

REQUIREMENTS

BYO iPad/iPod/iPhone/Android/Kindle device. Note compatibility with devices as follows:

  • iOS - Requires iOS 8+. iPad 2 does not support Bluetooth Smart robots
  • Android - Requires 4.4+. Some 4.4+ devices do not support Bluetooth Smart robots
  • Kindle - Requires Fire OS 5.0+ running on Kindle Fire 2015, Fire HD 6, Fire HD 8 or Fire HD 10
