About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

Join ShelterWA and Debbie Butler from Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) as we explore how to navigate the challenges when addressing co-tenancies and share houses.

This micro skills session will ensure that participants understand the difference between co-tenancies and share houses, so they are better able to manage leases, bonds, and ingoing and outgoing property condition reports. We will look at the different ways that a rental agreement can be used in a co-tenancy/share house and provide information to assist participants to deal with issues such as rent arrears and property damage.

This training is tailored to help tenancy officers, managers, and landlords to explore the roles and responsibilities when handling abandoned goods and how we can apply best practice when discharging responsibilities of abandoned goods.

About our facilitator

Debbie has had a diverse career with Consumer Protection since she commenced as Regional Coordinator – Southwest in the Bunbury office in mid-2013. In 2019, following a period co-ordinating the Consumer Protection Advice Line, Debbie moved to lead a small communications team in the Property Industries Directorate and following the recent restructure is now leading a small projects team in the Legislation and Policy Directorate working on projects involving motor vehicles, the Australian Consumer Law, tenancy and residential parks.

Debbie was born and raised in Tasmania before making the move to Western Australia (WA) in 2007 to manage the Employment Law Centre of WA. Before working with Consumer Protection Debbie worked in the fields of employment law and industrial relations. Her work history is diverse, having also worked in employment services, real estate, and as a cook in an aged care facility.

Until the move to WA Debbie had been involved in and held offices in a number of local, state, and national organisations working to improve public education, politics, and mental health. She was an active lobbyist in Tasmania and retains a significant interest in issues as diverse as housing, justice, and the prison system.
