Public Seminar: City Studio - A Model for Collaborative City Building

CityStudio is a learning and innovation hub co-located in a metropolitan city which connects students, City staff and community members to co-create projects on the ground that address real-world problems facing cities.

Founded in Vancouver, Canada - CityStudio aims to accelerate sustainability in higher learning and provide students with direct opportunities to work on the most challenging urban sustainability problems facing metropolitan cities. It is a collaboration between City staff and post-secondary educational institutions to provide innovative and practical learning experiences to help students gain in-depth understanding of theoretical concepts, whilst supporting social innovation and enterprise for the city in which they are located in.

Through the launching of experimental projects on-the-ground, university students learn the skills they need to succeed in today’s economy and inspire action in the community and government. CityStudio projects in the City of Vancouver have focused on such themes as access to nature, active living, clean air or water, climate leadership, local food, and transportation.

CityStudio quick facts
• It is the first of its kind in Canada and unique around the world.
• CityStudio was founded in Vancouver in 2011 and is now in development in six city hubs across Canada.
• CityStudio has key partnerships with the City of Vancouver and six of the city's post secondary schools.
• The Cities of Victoria, Abbotsford, Brantford and Waterloo have also embedded the CityStudio model as part of their economic, engagement and sustainability action plans. A government-funded study on British Columbia’s social venture sector found the sector has grown by 36% over the last five years, generates an estimated $533 million annually and employs more than 12,700 people.
• The CityStudio model has engaged with over 4,500 students and launched over 418 real-world enterprise/social venture projects.

Duane Elverum (CityStudio Vancouver Executive Director and Co-Founder) will present on CityStudio and how La Trobe University and the City will bring this exciting model of hands-on learning to Bendigo. Come along and find out how the Bendigo community can be involved with the CityStudio model.
