Child Safe Environments Training 7 Hour Course

About this event

Enhanced Lifestyles is a Child Safe Registered Organisation and we strongly support children, young people and their right to be safe at all times, including when accessing services in the community.

As a Child Safe Organisation, we:

• Take a preventative, proactive and participatory stance on child protection issues

• Value and embrace the opinions and views of children and young people

• Assist children and young people to build skills that will assist them to participate in society

• Are focused on the protection of children and young people and take action to protect them from harm

• Provide parents, guardians or carers with evidence of their child safe environments policies and procedures when requested.

Emma Moss, our Learning and Development Officer, has worked for a number of years as a Primary School and Adult Educator and is a fully qualified Child Safe Environments Trainer achieving her qualification through the Department for Education and Child Development.

Our Child Safe Environments training is the full 7 hour program and will equip you with the skills and knowledge to identify when a child or young person may be at risk of harm and understanding the mandatory reporting obligations according to the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 and associated regulations. The Child Safe Environments training has been updated to reflect current changes to the definition of harm and “at risk” in relation to child protection and changes to the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017

Under section 17 of the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017, harm in relation to a child or young person means:

• physical harm

• psychological harm (whether caused by an act or omission), including harm caused by sexual, physical, mental or emotional abuse, or

• neglect.

Under section 18 of the Safety Act, children and young people can also be “at risk”. This definition of children or young people being at risk or likely to be at risk has broadened a great deal since the Children and Young People (Safety) Act, 2017 and includes a likelihood that they will:

• suffer harm

• travel interstate for an unlawful medical procedure (including female genital mutilation)

• travel interstate for a marriage ceremony

• have parents who are unwilling or unable to care for them

• are persistently absent from school with no explanation

• have no fixed address.

Zoom Etiquette

• Mute your microphone. To help keep background noise to a minimum, make sure you mute your microphone when you are not speaking.

• Be mindful of background noise. When your microphone is not muted, avoid activities that could create additional noise, such as shuffling papers.

• Position your camera properly. If you choose to use a web camera, be sure it is in a stable position and focused at eye level, if possible. Doing so helps create a more direct sense of engagement with other participants.

• Limit distractions

• You can make it easier to focus on the meeting by turning off notifications, closing unnecessary apps and muting your smartphone

• Avoid multi-tasking. Focus on the presentation. You'll retain the discussion better if you refrain from replying to emails or text messages during the meeting and wait to work on that email or report until after the meeting ends.

• Please raise your hand or write your question in the Chat Console of Zoom and bring it up in the Q&A sections we will have throughout the session.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."

Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Testimonials

“Emma conducted the training in a professional and friendly manner whilst affording her trainee’s plenty opportunities to discuss ideas and comment on issues as they related to the trainee’s own personal experiences. This enabled clarification not only from a legal perspective but also produced a deeper and broader insight into what constitutes child abuse and neglect. I particularly found valuable the primacy of a ‘child focus’ approach in relation to assessing child abuse and how our values and attitudes impact our assessment of others. Emma was encouraging and knowledgeable throughout this process."

"The booklets, handouts and assessments helped consolidate my training. Upon completion of the Child-safe program I was better informed and felt the cost of the course was money well spent.” F.M
