About this event

Who made the first Oxford English Dictionary? A surprising and diverse group of people!

Lexicographer Sarah Ogilvie introduces this motley crew in her book The Dictionary People, diving deep into previously untapped archives to tell a people's history of the OED.

Archaeologists and astronomers, murderers, naturists, novelists, pornographers, queer couples, suffragists, vicars and vegetarians - and more - made the world-famous book that helped to define the English language.

Join us to hear some of their remarkable stories.

Sarah Ogilvie is a lexicographer who teaches at the University of Oxford and specialises in language, dictionaries and technology. She was Chief Editor of Oxford Dictionaries in Australia. She has also worked as a technologist in Amazon's innovation lab, where she was part of the team that developed the Kindle.

Sarah will be in conversation with Michael Yabsley.
