About this event

Cost - $320

Please read the CCPS Cancellation Policy below carefully, prior to making your booking.

I have a degree in Fine Art, completing 5 years of full-time study at The National Art School, Sydney in 1978. This is where I met and fell in love with clay! I also attended the Ivan Englund Pottery School workshop in Sydney at that time.

I am a current CCPS member. I have my own kiln and have experience in successfully glazing, packing and firing ceramic pieces.

I have a strong community spirit and aim to provide all students with the opportunity to increase their ceramic knowledge, experience and skills, in a safe, cooperative, respectful and caring learning environment.

The aim of these classes is to familiarize students with the feel of clay and teach them the basics of both throwing and hand-building. Making robust joins, whether adding a handle to a thrown mug or a handle to a slab jug, is an essential skill in the process. Students will create and complete at least one piece each week, for six weeks. Students will have the opportunity to experience both slab building and throwing on the wheel, to determine which process they prefer the best. Students will also be given basic clay firing information and be encouraged to glaze their own bisque pieces in the last two weeks.

The first two weeks will be used to construct a mug and /or a jug, by using the wheel to throw a cylinder. The following two weeks will concentrate on rolling out clay to hand-build a textured cylinder, in preparation to make a mug and/or a jug. There are a number of ways to create a handle. We will roll and pull a handle to suit our pieces.

In weeks 5 and 6, students will choose which method of construction suits them best… throwing clay on a wheel to make a cylinder, or using the slab roller to construct a mug or a jug. The process for the two weeks will be up to student choice. A suitable handle will be made and attached.

Week 7… a ‘rest’ week from classes, to allow the pottery pieces to dry sufficiently to go in the bisque fire kiln.

Week 7 of actual classes will focus on glazing bisque pieces.

Week 8 – Hopefully this will be a round table discussion of all the completed pieces. However, high humidity and winter weather brings its own ‘issues’ to drying clay sufficiently for the firing process. It may be necessary to reconvene at a later date, to pick up completed work.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There is plenty of on and off-street parking. However, we are located near several schools and when they have events, there can sometimes be difficulty finding a park close by. Please ensure you park legally to avoid a Council parking infringement.

What can I bring into the event?

Please refer to the list in your welcome email.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?
