TEACHER PROFILE

I have a degree in Fine Art, completing 5 years of full-time study at The National Art School, Sydney in 1978. This is where I met and fell in love with clay! I also attended the Ivan Englund Pottery School workshop in Sydney at that time.

I am a current CCPS member. I have my own kiln and have experience in successfully glazing, packing and firing ceramic pieces.

I have a strong community spirit and aim to provide all students with the opportunity to increase their ceramic knowledge, experience and skills, in a safe, cooperative, respectful and caring learning environment.

COURSE OUTLINE

In this class, you will learn the fundamental techniques of throwing clay on a wheel, by wedging, centring, opening out, pulling up and forming a basic cylinder. You will also learn how to turn or trim and finish the base of a leather hard pot.

Opportunities to decorate, underglaze, slip trail and apply glazes to your bisque fired work will also be given.

WEEKLY PROGRAM

Week 1 W H S / CCPS Rules / Emergency procedure & assembly area

• Refer to documents emailed to students

• Demonstration: the effects of earthenware clay in a stoneware firing

• Distribution of equipment and materials

• Demonstrate how to throw a cylinder. Students practise centring 300 -500 g clay and pulling up walls.

Week 2

• Demonstration and students practise centring clay, pulling up walls to make a cylinder.

• Returning students (from previous courses) focus on mastering and bettering their skills.

Week 3

• Demonstrate how to finish a leather hard pot, from the week before. Show a flat base cylinder and a cylinder with a foot.

• Students practise centring a ball of clay, pulling up walls to make a cylinder and turning a foot on a leather hard pot.

Week 4

• Adding colour and texture to a wheel thrown cylinder. Use underglaze, learn about sgraffito. Continue throwing with more precision. Turn/trim any leather hard pieces that are ready.

• Demonstrate how to alter the shape of the cylinder by tapering in slightly and then creating a slightly flared top. This could become a vase, jug or a drinking tumbler. Maybe pull a handle, if there is interest.

Week 5

• Last week to throw wet clay. Throw as many pieces as time allows.

• Turn any pots that are leather hard.

Week 6 - Last wet clay work

• Students complete pieces – turning, trimming, decorating. NO more throwing!

• Hand build a small pot with remaining clay

• All work to be completed tonight.

Week 7 - Glazing

• Glazing all bisque work

Week 8 - Glazing

• Glazing and pick up

• Review and discuss collection of works
