Catapult: Uncoiling Veils of Illusion
Kristina Chan dissolves the boundaries between performer and audience in the immersive projection cube at MAP mima.
Uncoiling Veils of Illusion is a transcendent journey into the depths of the human psyche and our most authentic and often overlooked relationship with the natural world. Conceived, choreographed, and directed by Kristina Chan, the work dissolves the boundaries between performer and audience, inviting each participant into a shared space of reflection, presence, and sensation.
Movement unfolds across the space, with dancers embodying the fluidity, tension, and mystery of the inner self. Alex Brunton’s 360-degree multi-channel film projections envelop the audience in shifting landscapes that blur the line between the external environment and the landscapes of the mind. Complementing this visual and corporeal language is James Hazel’s hypnotic, undulating soundscape, which ebbs and flows alongside the choreography and guides the audience toward states of deep listening, contemplation, and embodied awareness.
The work is not merely observed but experienced. Every gesture, projection, and sonic texture is designed to evoke an intimate kinaesthetic dialogue between audience and performance, revealing the illusions we carry and the raw, untamed truths beneath them. Uncoiling Veils of Illusion invites witnesses to feel, reflect, and encounter the wild and ineffable parts of themselves and the world around them.
