Case Studies in Early Medical Abortion in Melbourne's East

About this webinar:

Early medical abortion is a safe, common and legal procedure. Yet access barriers still remain for people seeking early medical abortion, with less than 10% of GPs in Australia registered to prescribe medical abortion, and even fewer doing so in primary care. Abortion seekers in Melbourne's East still often need to leave the region to access abortion healthcare, with less GPs able to provide early medical abortion in Melbourne's East than the state average.

Hear from expert speakers:

  • Dr Kathy McNamee (GP and Medical Director) and Larissa Hudson (Senior nurse educator / sexual and reproductive health nurse) from Sexual Health Victoria.
  • Emily Duyen-Dang (Stakeholder engagement) from 1800 My Options.

Learning outcomes:

  • An understanding of early medical abortion, including the process for prescribing, dispensing and supporting patients through the procedure,
  • Hearing from other GPs in how to establish an early medical abortion practice in Melbourne's Eastern suburbs,
  • Referral pathways for post-procedure presentations,
  • Patient pathways to accessing abortion healthcare (including how to list your practice as a service provider),
  • Opportunities for further professional development and training, including the Royal Women's Hospital Clinical Champions Project e-modules and MSI Australia's MS-2 Step training.
  • Opportunities to have your questions answered by local clinicians.

A Zoom link will be sent to registered attendees a few days before the event. Certificates of attendance can be provided to attendees on request.

Together for Equality & Respect (TFER) is a four year strategy aimed at preventing violence against women in Melbourne’s East 2021- 2025. TFER’s purpose is to motivate and support organisations in the Eastern Metropolitan Region to take action to promote gender equality and equal and respectful relationships as the means by which violence against women and their children will be prevented.

The Strategy vision is:

A society where people of all genders are equally valued, heard and respected, with equal access to opportunities – where women and children live free from discrimination and men’s violence.

The TFER Partnership proudly acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work.
