Event description
Cairns Tropical Writers Festival promises to be a creatively simulating cultural event, celebrating storytelling in all its forms.

About this event

Grab a Weekend Pass for the biennial Cairns Tropical Writers Festival on 13-15 August 2021 at the Pullman Cairns International. This year embarks on the next 10-year plan to further grow and internationalise this now major literary event in the northern Queensland region with local and visiting national and international authors.

The festival offers opportunities to participate in a wide range of book writing and publishing sessions, seminars, masterclasses and workshops, panel discussions and other ticketed events, providing inspiration and nurturing creative aspirations.

For our national guests, this is a winter getaway, a friendly and welcoming cultural experience that touches the inspirational heart of the region in an environment of immense cultural beauty where two World Heritage areas meet - reef and rainforest.

What does a Weekend Pass cover?

We have multiple streams running at once at the Pullman Cairns International, plus a bookshop. The main arena is accessible on a Weekend Pass, as well as some of the other streams holding author or publisher sessions or conversations, as a choice. The remaining streams may feature a ticketed event such as a half-day masterclass or workshop. There is a diverse youth and First Nations program with sessions run as lead-up events before and after the main festival event, as well as during the weekend.

Visiting authors and events will be progressively announced, with the full program published 4-6 weeks before the event. The program is almost formed and approved, and we look forward to sharing with you the many exciting and vibrant events on offer.

Organiser of Cairns Tropical Writers Festival - Weekend Pass

ABOUT: Cairns Tropical Writers Festival

The biennial Cairns Tropical Writers Festival (CTWF) began in 2008 for readers, writers and thinkers as a gathering in Cairns to provides opportunities for the far flung regional community to meet, network and be motivated by published authors and the wider writing and publishing industry.

CTWF is now the largest regional writers festival in Queensland.

From 2020 the ambition was to begin to internationalise the festival via Cairns International airport along established nature-based tourism routes on the edge of the Asia-Pacific rim. But since Covid the festival has had to pivot its attention towards the region’s distinct place in the world and points of difference.

The outcome is that CTWF2021 is a hyper-local celebration of World Heritage Reef and Rainforest with an expanded First Nations program including the Cape York and Torres Straits, and a focus on the urgent social, cultural, environmental and economic conversations on the future of the planet.

The festival theme, chosen in early 2020, is CHANGE (in all its forms), has now become more relevant than ever.
