ABOUT HANNIE RAYSON

Hannie Rayson, is one of Australia’s best-loved playwrights. She is the multi-award winning author of 15 plays, including Hotel Sorrento, Inheritance, Two Brothers and Life After George.

Her latest play Extinction was commissioned by the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York. In Australia it was directed by Nadia Tass and produced by GPAC and Red Stitch and performed at the Melbourne Arts Centre, Geelong Performing Arts Centre and Canberra Theatre. (The Canberra Times compared it to Ibsen). It has been selected for the VCE English list for 2018.

Hannie is the only author ever to have been nominated for The Miles Franklin Award for a play. Her plays have been produced in major theatre companies in Australia and overseas. Life After George opened on the West End in 2002. Michael Billington from The Guardian said, “her play bursts with the vitality that is a hallmark of Australian drama.”

Hotel Sorrento is currently on a national tour. It runs from May to October 2018. To date this play has had 176 independent productions. Hotel Sorrento was adapted for a feature film and nominated for ten AFI (AACTA) awards, winning two: best supporting actor (Ray Barrett) and best adapted screenplay. Hannie has also won Helpmann Awards, Premiers Literary Awards, Green Room Awards, The Age Performing Arts Award and Australian Writers Guild Awards. Hannie writes columns for newspapers and magazines and works happily in both the theatre and literary worlds.

She adapted her best-selling memoir Hello, Beautiful! to a stage play and is currently on tour performing her one-woman show around Australia.
