Building Culture

Date: Monday 05 November
Time: 6pm
Where: Australia Council for the Arts
372 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills
Admission: Free for SAMAG Members

Across Australia many arts organisations are undergoing significant building redevelopments and expansion of artistic programs, from State Cultural Institutions to independent and regional arts organisations.

So how does a cultural organisation determine and translate its future needs into hard infrastructure? What does it take to get the support required to kick-start building expansion plans? What alternative and innovative operating models are possible? And once implemented, how do you ensure that artists and audiences will activate your new programs and spaces?

Hear from a panel of cultural leaders who are both in the midst and on the other side of significant physical growth for their arts organisations.

Speakers:

Rosie Dennis: CEO/Artistic Director, Urban Theatre Projects
Russell Briggs: Director, Engagement, Exhibitions & Cultural Connection, Australian Museum
Karyn Ford: Director, Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA), Albury
Gina Fairley (Chair): National Visual Arts Editor for ArtsHub

Speaker biographies:

Russell Briggs oversees the permanent, temporary and touring exhibitions; public and education programs; digital; Museum archives and library; and the extensive cultural collections at the Australian Museum. He has previously held directorial positions at Auckland Museum and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne.

Rosie Dennis is renowned for bringing stories to the stage that are full of humanity and have a distinct universality and currency. Since joining Urban Theatre Projects Rosie has directed two documentaries (Bre & Back SBS TV and One Day For Peace ABC TV), directed the sell-out season of Home Country – a theatrical triptych staged in a multi-level carpark and curated the award winning BANKSTOWN:LIVE.

Gina Fairley is the National Visual Arts Editor for ArtsHub.com.au. She has written prolifically for art magazines internationally, freelanced as a curator and writer in Southeast Asia, and published over 50 catalogue essays. Prior to writing she worked as an arts manager in America and Australia for fifteen years and was co-director of an ARI.

Karyn Ford, whilst at Albury City Council, brought her finance experience and leadership to the redevelopment of Albury Regional Art Gallery during implementation, construction and completion. Karyn has since served in several roles within MAMA, including Creative Business and Operations Coordinator, and now Acting Director, and adds a strong practical and fiscal approach to the ongoing sustainability and success of the museum.
