Celebrate stories of our community during this three-day event as part of The Living in Harmony Festival 2016. Breaking Bread is about sharing stories, conversations and common human experiences across diverse cultures. All three days will feature Waverley Council's unique <A HREF="http://www.epn.org.au/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Eat, Pray, Naches</A> exhibition celebrating Jewish community and culture.

<H2>Panel: Displacement and Resilience</H2>
<H3>Thursday 10 March, 6pm - 8pm</H3>
Join us for a discussion about ‘Displacement and Resilience’ featuring guest speakers from the Aboriginal, Jewish, refugee and GLBTIQ communities as they share their stories about life in Australia.
Our guests will offer insight into their experiences of displacement from home, country and society, how they rose above adversity to make great contribution to the community.
Many of us now call Sydney home and each of our stories share commonalities.
The panel will be hosted by Jeff McMullen AM (award winning former ABC journalist) and includes:

Participants will have the opportunity to break bread as a symbol of connecting different cultures, peace and friendship.

<H2>Damper and Challah Workshop</H2>
<H3>Friday 11 March, 11am - 1pm</H3>
Learn how to make bread from Aboriginal and Jewish cultures with our experienced chefs.
Learn about the cultural significance of bread and the history that goes with it. You will get to prepare and enjoy the braided Jewish bread called ‘challah’ as well as damper and hear the stories from both.
The workshop will be facilitated by Our Big Kitchen who run a charitable kitchen to help people and families in need.
Open to everyone, families and children welcome!

Vic Alhadeff – The Best and Worst of History 
Vic’s story is connected to the racist apartheid regime in South Africa, where he was chief sub-editor of The Cape Times – an anti-apartheid newspaper in Cape Town. His grandparents died at Auschwitz. He wrote two books on South African history and immigrated to Australia, where he edited the Australian Jewish News and is currently CEO of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, representing the NSW Jewish community. He is the former Chair of the NSW Community Relations Commission.

Rev Dorothy McRae-McMahon – Caring Enough to Find a Voice 
Receiver of the Australian Government Peace Award and 1988 Australian Human Rights Medal. She became a leader in the successful campaign to have homosexual ministers formally accepted within the Uniting Church, arguing that homosexuality was a sign of wholeness rather than evidence of moral decay.

Dalia Ayalon Sinclair OAM – The Gift of Giving – The Joy of Receiving 
Dalia was born in 1947 to Holocaust Survivors who fled Europe during the most defining moments in the History of the Jewish State. Growing up in Israel she faced many challenges and in 1973 she arrived with her young family to Australia. She had to adjust to living away from her homeland and family. Since 1981, she has been active within a number of organisations both in a professional and voluntary basis thus contributing to the Jewish community and wider communities in Australia.

Andrew Havas OAM – The Courage of Strangers 
Andrew has many life stories from being a refugee to gaining an OAM; from travelling and living in Africa among the natives to having a career in communications and attaining senior management level without education. Joining the army and then SAS. Founder of an anti-bullying program in NSW called ‘Courage to Care’ with over 320 volunteers and 100,000 school students attending workshops over the last 16 years and …much more.

Zaki Haidari – Escaping From Death at 17 and Seeking Protection
</LI>

A book about a young asylum seeker escaping from death as 17 and seeking asylum (Protection), challenges from Afghanistan to Australia to success becoming an International Student of the Year NSW 2015 without any government support and no funding for studies and no work right. Without knowing how long to live but optimistic to have a brighter future if survived.

 James Maximilian Kwa - The Joys and Importance of Vibrant Diversity
James is currently in his final (ultimate) year of his Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Arts degree programme majoring in International Business, International Relations and Asian Studies. He has had various working experiences in different Corporations including Volkswagen, Chevron International, AusGrid and the Bank of Singapore. He is currently working as a Marketing Associate for the Chatswood Chamber of Commerce. Although only 25, he has spent a good part of his life living, working and studying in many countries including the US, China, Sweden, Singapore and Australia. This has thus made him become very passionate about the need to generate cultural awareness and intelligence in this increasingly globalized world. He firmly believes that the joys of vibrant diversity is key to a more harmonious and peaceful world.

Garry Wotherspoon – Being Me In A Changing World
I grew up in a world in which my sexuality was considered criminal, a mortal sin, or a mental illness – indeed, it wasn’t until I was in my early forties that I was ‘decriminalized’, so that my emotional and sex life was on a par with my heterosexual friends.So much of my growing up, and experiencing my twenties and thirties, was lived under this cloud, and it undoubtedly affected me in a variety of ways.
Yet despite these constraints, I lived a life much as my heterosexual peers did, I went to school, played soccer and athletics, went on to university, worked in a bank for ten years, then switched to become an academic, where – eventually – I was able to merge two important aspects of my life, my interest in history, and my being ‘gay’, and write ‘gay history’ 
I was also, from the early 1970s, involved in gay political activism, joinging CAMP in 1971 and being part of that first Mardi Gras, in June 1978.
But apart from the books on gay life in Sydney and Australia, I have also written or edited various books on other aspects of Sydney life – on the city’s transport, on its minorities, and a history of one of its more famous streets, Oxford Street, where I now live.
So I feel I have lived a rich and interesting life – and I’m not finished yet.
