Learn the basics of breadmaking!

About this event

Learn the basics of breadmaking from your own kitchen, and discover how to make your first delicious crusty white loaf in this online baking workshop.

Catherine will explain how to work with yeast, and lead you through kneading, shaping and baking your loaf in this friendly and informative session. There will be plenty of tips and tricks for beginners, and an opportunity to ask questions.

Note that you will not complete your loaf in this session, as rising, proofing and baking are time-consuming. However, you will create the dough in a hands-on session, then watch a demonstration of the next steps, which you can complete later at home when your dough is ready.

Hosted by Catherine Saunders, the emphasis is on teaching beginners the basics of breadmaking, including ingredients and advice.

Participants will supply their own ingredients and tools at home.

You will need:

500g white flour (preferably bread flour -- you can use plain flour but your results won't be quite as good)

  • 1t salt
  • 2t instant dried yeast
  • 285-300ml warm water (around 35 degrees celsius)
  • 2t sugar
  • 2T olive oil

  • a large bowl
  • a mixing spoon
  • plastic wrap
  • a damp tea towel
  • a large cast iron casserole dish, with a lid (or a baking sheet)
  • baking paper
  • a small, sharp knife (or bread lame)

Participants need to book via Eventbrite. Session is fully ONLINE via ZOOM.

This event is available for library members only. Please have your membership card ready when booking your ticket. If you would like to become a member of Shellharbour City Libraries please click here.
