Description

The Centre for Environmental Law's Jane Goodall Institute's Roots & Shoots Program and the Macquarie University Sustainability Group have started a Plastic Free Campus Campaign, and would like to officially launch this campaign with a screening of Blue the film!

We are delighted to be joined by special guest speaker, Justin Field MLC at NSW Parliament. Justin is an active community campaigner and has an extensive history in environmental and marine policy, advocacy, and campaign work. This year Justin introduced a bill in the Upper House aimed at reducing plastic pollution by 90 per cent by 2020 and phasing out all single use plastic products by the end of 2023. In addition, Justin campaigns for the protection of the marine environment by advocating for marine protected areas, and non-lethal alternatives to the lethal NSW shark meshing program.

Blue the Film is a marine conservation film about the hidden crisis lapping on our shores. Our ocean has been our guardian on Earth, and now it is out turn to help protect our planet. The film covered issues from plastic pollution, to over-fishing and shark conservation.

The event is FREE, but get in quick to register your name for a ticket, as they are going fast! You do not have to be a Macquarie University student to attend. Please share this event with family and friends!

We will also be running a mobile phone recycling program on the night! A mineral Coltan, that is used in mobile phone is mined in critical chimpanzee habitat, money from each mobile phone is donated to the Jane Goodall Institute to help work with the local communities and supply alternative option to mining coltan and to rescue chimpanzees. Any data on your phone will be officially destroyed and as well as taking mobile phones, we can also accept ipods and ipads. For more information on this program head to: https://www.janegoodall.org.au/mobile-phone-recycling/

In efforts to recycle, encourage sustainability and raise awareness for mental health, our campaign to provide DVDs to a local mental health clinic is still ongoing. So if you have any old DVDs lying around or no longer watch due to Netflix, please also bring some along on the night!
