Event Details

Regenerative medicine is a multidisciplinary field, exploring translational research to develop novel therapeutics to repair and regenerate damaged tissues and organs. These therapies employ the use of biomaterials, stem cells and a range of bioactive compounds to induce or enhance the body’s own regenerative capacity. Case studies demonstrating the necessity to develop composite materials to accomplish the challenging, multi-faceted repair of bone and cartilage tissue will be presented. The mechanical reinforcement of biological-inspired approaches is a reoccurring theme, and various methods to achieve this will be addressed within this lecture, from the use of stiff, reinforcing nano-sized ceramic particles, to the application of biofabrication techniques such as 3D Bioprinting to incorporate polymeric structures to tissue engineered constructs.

Speaker Biography: With over 12 years’ experience in Regenerative Medicine research, Dr Gráinne Cunniffe has conducted a wide range of investigations to develop biomaterial-based technologies for the regeneration of damaged musculoskeletal tissues. She has co-authored publications and patents on topics ranging from biofabrication and 3D bioprinting, to the use of extracellular matrix (ECM) derived materials as scaffolds for regenerative medicine in addition to the incorporation of cells, drugs and gene delivery into these approaches. She has project managed numerous pre-clinical trials, striving to translate the promising products being developed within the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering in Dublin towards clinical applications. Her recent grant funding aims to develop off-the-shelf, bioprinted implants for osteochondral regeneration.
