Big Data and Shrinking Democracies

Centre of Democracy

By Joshua Fanning, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, CityMag
The Washington Post's mantra reads: "Democracy dies in darkness" and yet their unrelenting spotlight on the want-to-be autocrat Trump is simultaneously driving their revenue machine. The media's business model is built around numbers – more readers = more money and readers can't get enough of Trump. Join publisher of CityMag, Josh Fanning as he takes you 'behind the paywall' and walks you through the basics of the media's business model and how – despite all the trouble its caused – data and the Internet can strengthen the democratic process.
National Science Week runs from 11 to 19 August and is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology and thousands of individuals – from students, to scientists to chefs and musicians – get involved, taking part in more than 1000 science events across the nation.
