'Beyond the Battlefield' military history talk: 'Kokoda Track battlefields'
Join us for a dive into military history at our 'Beyond the Battlefield' talks where we explore untold or little-known stories.
Welcome to our February Friends of Kokoda (FoK) 'Beyond the Battlefield' military history talk event.
Join us on Saturday 14 February 2026 at 10:30 AM at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway's Ralph Honner Education Centre, where our speakers discuss military history topics, both on and beyond the battlefield.
Our talk in February will see author and Kokoda Track expert Bill James speak on 'Uncovering the Kokoda Track Battlefields'. After WWII, very few visitors trekked the Kokoda Track. Villages shifted locations as new gardens were cut; some tracks fell into disuse; the jungle regrowth covered many vestiges of the battlefields. With the assistance of the veterans themselves, Bill James spent two decades uncovering these sacred sites. They are now a place of pilgrimage for many young Australians.
Bill is the author of the comprehensive guide for trekkers, the 'Field Guide to the Kokoda Track', now in its fourth edition.
Admission for members of the FoK program is free; others can pay a small donation of $5.00 on the day (or through our website).
Connect with fellow military history enthusiasts at the Walkway and don't miss out on this unique experience!
