'Beyond the Battlefield' military history talk: 'Japanese WWII veterans'
Join us for a dive into military history at our 'Beyond the Battlefield' talks where we explore untold or little-known stories.
Welcome to our April Friends of Kokoda (FoK) 'Beyond the Battlefield' military history talk event.
Join us on Saturday 11 April 2026 at 10:30 AM at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway's Ralph Honner Education Centre, where our speakers discuss military history topics, both on and beyond the battlefield.
Our April talk will see renowned author Dr Peter Williams asking the question: 'What did Japanese veterans think about WWII?' When he interviewed Japanese veterans from WWII, Peter Williams found their views candid, provocative and shocking. There are accounts of the killing of prisoners; appalling fighting conditions; cannibalism and some non-too complimentary opinions about their enemies. But then there are descriptions of family life, of the joy they found in serving their nation, of camaraderie. Like all veterans, the Japanese held a variety of viewpoints. Some thought the war was a mistake, others were unrepentant, believing that Japan’s surrender was a disgraceful act and they should have fought on.
Dr Williams will read excerpts from his book 'Japan’s Pacific War: Personal Accounts of the Emperor’s Warriors', and attempt to explain the Japanese veteran’s viewpoint. Peter has also published other military history books on the war, including books on the Kokoda Track and Papuan campaigns.
Admission for members of the FoK program is free; others can pay a small donation of $5.00 on the day (or through our website).
Connect with fellow military history enthusiasts at the Walkway and don't miss out on this unique experience!
