1843 Warrigal Ck Massacre: 'Beyond the Battlefield' military history talk
Join us for a dive into military history at our 'Beyond the Battlefield' talks where we explore untold or little-known stories.
Welcome to our November Friends of Kokoda (FoK) 'Beyond the Battlefield' military history talk event.
Join us on Saturday 28 November 2026 at 10:30 AM at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway's Ralph Honner Education Centre, where our speakers discuss military history topics, both on and beyond the battlefield.
Our talk in November will see academic and author Dr Seumas Spark speak on 'The Warrigal Creek Massacre, GunaiKurnai Country (Gippsland) 1843'.
In July 1843, between 60 and 180 GunaiKurnai men, women and children were massacred by European settlers at Warrigal Creek in south Gippsland. The killings at Warrigal Creek proved to be one of the bloodiest encounters on the Australian colonial frontier. For the GunaiKurnai, the traditional owners of Gippsland, the consequences of the massacre were profound, and continue to be felt. This talk discusses different GunaiKurnai responses to, and perspectives on, this frontier war massacre.
Dr Seumas Spark is an author and Adjunct Fellow in History, Monash University, and has presented twice before at the Walkway, on the Papuan and New Guineans' experience during WWII, and the enduring legacy of the 'Dunera Boys' in Australian history.
Admission for members of the FoK program is free; others can pay a small donation of $5.00 on the day (or through our website).
Connect with fellow military history enthusiasts at the Walkway and don't miss out on this unique experience!
