A refined night of Japanese jazz, electronic pioneer sounds and deep-cut vinyl from one of Melbourne’s most respected collectors. Join us at Bar Selecta as Joel Shortman (Rathdowne Records) takes you Beyond City Pop — diving into late-Showa treasures spanning Kimiko Kasai, YMO, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi, and more.

The night begins with a warm-up set by DJ Dallas (6–8PM) before Joel guides a true Jazz-Kissa-inspired listening journey from 8PM onwards.

JOEL SHORTMAN (RATHDOWNE RECORDS)

Joel Shortman — aka Jazzy Joel — began flipping soundtracks and jazz in the late 2000s at his video store before opening Rathdowne Records (Northcote) in 2014.
Now home to 25,000+ records, the shop is a Melbourne institution for jazz, psych, hip-hop, bebop, boom bap and Japanese late-Showa rarities.
