Basket Weaving Bliss - 'wrapping' and 'mariposa' stitches

By Heartwood Nature Bathing

Overview

Cultivate calm, connection and creativity as you learn to weave with raffia. Beginners welcome!

Ready to slow down, connect, and create?

In this full day of weaving at the Ipswich Art Workshop, you will learn to weave using the 'wrapping' and 'mariposa' techniques. You can combine these styles to make one basket or wall hanging, or make two smaller pieces. (Check my other events for other stitch styles!)

No prior experience is needed for this experience, which will help you cultivate a sense of calm, creativity and connection.

All materials are provided.

You will be invited to bring a plate of something simple to share for lunch.

Please note your faciliator is non-Indigenous. This is not an Indigenous weaving workshop. It is taught from a contemporary craft perspective. Sponsored places are available for Mob (2 per workshop.) Please reach out to the organiser if this is for you.

Where?

This small group experience takes place at the beautiful Ipswich Art Workshop, in d’Arcy Doyle Place adjacent to the Ipswich Art Gallery.

This venue is accessible for wheelchair users.

Further details will be provided via email in the week prior to the workshop - please ensure you use the correct email to register! Eventbrite's emails can sometimes wind up in your spam/junk folder so be sure to check there if nothing arrives, or get in touch!

What to expect

This event has a maximum of 12 participants, and is suitable for people 12 years and over.

We will use premium hand-dyed raffia, and weave in a coil style.

No prior experience is necessary and all materials are provided.

Y ou can expect to weave a small basket or coaster in this session, and you will take home the skills needed to complete larger projects. This includes learning about shaping and finishing techniques.

Our group will share a communal, family-style lunch. Tea and coffee and provided.

Your Host

Monique Ross is a fibre artist who absolutely loves weaving! She has exhibited at Vacant Assembly Gallery, Side Gallery and Field Trip Gallery in Brisbane, and was the 2025 Artist in Residence at the Cossack Art Awards in Western Australia. She has been teaching weaving for several years.

As a non-Indigenous weaver, Monique is mindful of ongoing conversations around cultural appropriation and approaches her work with deep respect and care. She acknowledges the rich and enduring weaving traditions of First Nations peoples across Australia and beyond. Her own practice is through a contemporary lens—rooted in diverse craft forms, nature connection, and mindfulness. Monique is clear that she is not an Indigenous artist and does not teach or represent Indigenous cultural practices.

Monique is also a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, who trained with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy. She is the founder of Heartwood Nature Bathing.

Monique has a blue card, up-to-date certifications in Remote and Wilderness Area First Aid, and full public liability insurance. All of the appropriate permits have been secured.
