About The Project

Backroads in Brookton is about shooting from the heart while immersing yourself in a rural community and providing memorable, high quality images. You'll learn photographic and design techniques to create images with real impact. Images that people will remember, images that people will value and images that will be milestones in people's minds.

What is Immersion Photography?

American photographer, Margaret Burke-White said: "Saturate yourself with your subject and your camera will all but take you by the hand."

Immersion photography is about getting in close, exploring, understanding and integrating with your subject. Brookton is a small rural town, a little over an hours drive from Perth. For three days we will immerse ourselves in the life, culture and history of the town, working with townspeople and farmers to produce images that reflect their way of life.

Our weekend combines workshops, visual presentations, town shoots and unique excursions.

We join with local townspeople for a workshop on the preservation and restoration of historical photographs. You'll receive a briefing on the immersion project and the exhibition. Our first practical shoot takes in the town centre and will interact with town personalities.

We travel to a nearby farm to photograph two significant local people in a forest, with props developed for us by a well-known artist and educator.

Another excursion takes us to a cluster of deserted historical farm buildings on a private property.

You'll also be invited to photograph a community volunteer group on location. Our final shoot for the weekend is photographing locally restored vintage vehicles both statically and moving. We wrap up our weekend with a BBQ on a rural property.

Backroads in Brookton plans to stage an exhibition, both in Brookton and in Perth, with images taken by workshop participants. In this way we are contributing something positive back to the people of Brookton.

Accommodation/ Meals

Terms & Conditions

The organizers are Dale Neill ((Fotograf Pty Ltd) & Des Lewis (Mondo Photography).
Country Daze Backroads in Brookton is referred to as the project.
The organizers reserve the right to alter any of the planned shoots, locations, accommodation, meal arrangements or project leaders depending on weather or other circumstances.
Participants own the copyright to all the images they shoot.
The project provides access to several private properties. These properties are not available to participants before or after the project.
The organizers will arrange talent releases for people in scheduled shoots.
Neither the organizers, The Project or service providers accept any responsibility for personal injury, inconvenience, damage or loss of property. Participants are advised to take out travel insurance to cover themselves and their property.

Cancellation Policy

If the organizers cancel Backroads in Brookton for any reason, participants will receive a 100% refund.

If a participant cancels the following applies:

Before 17 September 2021, 90% refund
On or after 17 September 2021, 75% refund
