Requirements for attending Small Group Classes: Updated 19 July 2022

As pregnant women are a higher-risk group for COVID-19, additional precautions remain in place.

  • All attendees must be triple vaccinated against COVID-19 (two doses plus a booster).
  • All attendees must consent to a Rapid Antigen Test on the day of the class. We will provide this for you.
  • Face-masks must be worn during the class.
  • We do not recommend attending after 36 weeks of pregnancy.

The Baby Safe Program Deluxe Package offer you all the features of the program in one package.

The Baby Safe Program deluxe package combines hands-on learning in a small group class, virtual learning (live and interactive with Dr Rose), video resources and online learning.

Your package includes:

Module 1: Safe Sleeping to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy

This module covers:

  1. Safe Sleep Environment for babies 0 to 12 months
  2. Reducing the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI), including SIDS
  3. Safe wrapping (swaddling) for sleep and to promote normal hip development
  4. Use of a safe sleeping bag
  5. Dressing your baby for sleep
  6. Thermal stress (over-heating) and how to avoid it
  7. How to determine which nursery products are safe for your baby
  8. Nursery products that are unsafe for babies and pose a risk of SUDI, including SIDS

Mode: Two options are available:

  • Virtual (live and interactive with Dr Rose Boland) OR
  • Face-to-face in a small group class, held at Prahran High School

Module 2: Recognising and responding to an unwell baby

This module covers:

  1. Normal baby behaviour
  2. Behavioural cues your baby is becoming unwell
  3. How and when to take your baby's temperature and interpret the results
  4. Fever and other variations of normal temperature
  5. Breathing and colour
  6. Jaundice
  7. Vomiting and posseting
  8. Rashes
  9. When and where to seek help if you are concerned about your baby

Mode:

  • Face-to-face in a small group (limited to 6 couples)
  • Taught with Module 3 on the same day

Module 3: Baby Basic Life Support

This module covers:

  1. Indications for calling 000 for an ambulance
  2. Baby cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (baby CPR)
  3. Management of choking
  4. Management of febrile convulsions
  5. Button battery ingestion
  6. Bath and water safety

Mode:

  • Face-to-face in a small group (limited to 6 couples)
  • Taught with Module 2 on the same day

Baby Safe Program Video Series and online learning (one year unlimited access)

  • Safe Sleeping to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy
  • Safe swaddling (swapping) to promote normal hip development
  • Baby Basic Life Support (Baby cardio-pulmonary resuscitation )
  • Management of a choking infant (on food and on milk)

Baby Basic Life Support Fridge Magnets

  • Baby cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR )
  • Management of a choking infant

All participants will receive a Baby Safety resource pack including:

  • Recognising signs of an unwell baby information sheet
  • Red Nose Safe Sleeping brochure
  • ACCC “Keeping Babies Safe- A guide to infant and nursery products” book
  • Kidsafe Button Battery brochure
  • Royal Life Saving Society "Keep watch at Bath time brochure"
  • Evidence-based apps and websites for a range of Baby Safety resources

Cost: $175 per person

(Normal value $250 if modules and videos are purchased separately- you save $75!)

  • Limited to 12 positions at each class (6 couples)

6 hour program:

  • 2 hours virtual or face-to-face (Module 1)
  • 2.75 hours face-to-face (Modules 2 and 3 are taught together)
  • 1.25 hours online learning (Video resources and self-tests)

To book your Baby Safe Program Deluxe package:

  1. Choose your preferred date to attend Modules 2 and 3 (taught in one 2.5 hour session) - This is located on the top right hand corner of this screen.
  2. Book your place. Please book a place for each person attending.
  3. Once you have booked, you will be able to choose a date to attend Module 1.

Frequently asked questions:

What COVID-19 precautions are in place?

To minimise the risk of transmission of COVID-19, the following are provided for all participants:

  • Class size limited to 6 couples (12 attendees maximum)
  • All attendees must be triple vaccinated against COVID-19 vaccination (2 doses plus a booster)
  • Alcohol-based sanitiser at every table
  • Each participant will have their own manikin
  • Personal protective equipment (surgical face-mask & gloves) provided
  • All equipment is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected prior to and following each class.
  • Please note: Performing 'breathing' into the mannikins is not permitted at present- this will be simulated.
  • All consumables are discarded at the end of the class and are not re-used
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring of all occupied spaces via a purpose-built mechanical ventilation system adjusting air circulation based on CO2 levels.
  • Rapid Antigen Testing of all attendees on the day of the class

COVID-19 vaccination

Attendance at a small group, face-to-face class requires all attendees to be triple vaccinated against COVID-19 (2 doses plus a booster).

Rapid Antigen Test

Attendance at a small group, face-to-face class will require all attendees to have a Rapid Antigen Test on the day of their class. This will be provided for you by Dr Rose Boland.

Can my partner or other family member book a place at this program?

Yes, anyone can book a place to attend the Baby Safe Program.

  • This includes parters, grandparents, sisters and brothers (over 18 years of age)
  • Please book a place for each person who is attending with you.
  • If you need a booking for 3 people, please contact Dr Rose first to check on availability.

Can I bring my baby with me?

Babies <6 months of age are always welcome.

Can I bring another child with me?

Sorry- we are not able to accomodate siblings or children/infants over the age of 6 months at this class.

Can I claim a rebate on my Private Health insurance?

Most Private Health Funds do not offer rebates for childbirth education classes. Please check with your provider.

Can I get a refund if I am no longer able to attend?

A full refund is available if you cancel >24 hours prior to the face-to-face class. However, the Eventbrite fee is not refundable.

Cancellations <24 hours prior to the face-fo-face class (other than for hospital admission or a positive COVID-19 diagnosis) and 'no shows' are non-refundable.

A full refund, or transfer to an alternative is automatically available if the class is cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions (lockdown).

Will I receive a First Aid Certificate on completion of this program?

Attendance at a Baby Safe Program does not lead to a professional qualification or a certification of competency in basic life support or infant resuscitation.

This is a non-accredited training course.

Dr Rosemarie Boland : Director: Precious Care Australia

PhD, Master of Nursing, Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse

Dr Rosemarie Boland a newborn educator, neonatal intensive care nurse and midwife with over 30 years’ experience. She specialises in providing first aid training for expectant parents, and parents and families of newborn babies and ex-premature infants. In addition, she develops training programs, clinical practice guidelines and resources for medical, nursing, midwifery and paramedic healthcare professionals in Victoria in her role as a statewide perinatal educator with the newborn emergency transport service.

Dr Rose Boland has over 25 peer reviewed publications, has written text book chapters and helps develop guidelines for Ambulance Victoria around obstetric and newborn emergencies.

The Baby Safe Program was developed by Dr Rose Boland. All classes (virtual, small group and private) are taught by Dr Rose Boland.
