Mary‑Lou Stephens was born in Tasmania and studied acting at the Victorian College of the Arts before performing in bands across Melbourne, Hobart, and Sydney. She later moved into radio, working as a presenter and music director for both commercial stations and the ABC. Her memoir Sex, Drugs and Meditation (2013) received strong critical praise, and she has since become known for her evocative historical fiction, including The Last of the Apple Blossom (2021) and the bestselling The Chocolate Factory (2024) and The Jam Maker. Mary‑Lou now travels the world with her husband while continuing to write.
