About this event

Walk in the footsteps of past female prisoners and discover what life was like for women incarcerated in Old Melbourne Gaol.

Join an experienced guide on The Female Ward Tour, which will allow you to see what life was like for Women in Melbourne and how they were treated within the justice system, including the work they did.

Before the Female Ward was built women were housed with the male prisoners. Whilst afforded separate cells, they were nonetheless forced to endure the indignities and harassment that came with this arrangement. Old Melbourne Gaol was built in 1847 and it wasn’t until 20 years later that the additional wing was completed. Elizabeth Scott, the first woman hanged in Victoria, was more than likely imprisoned in this new ward.

Although the ward has since being demolished, this unique tour offers visitors to hear the stories of some notable characters that truly highlight the hardships they faced.

The tour includes both the Gaols grounds and the Gaol itself. General Admission entry to the Gaol is included in the ticket price.
