About this event

  • 1 hour 15 minutes

Award-winning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander singer, social historian and cultural practitioner Jessie Lloyd will present a workshop for teachers in studioFive at the Faculty of Education, University of Melbourne.

Jessie will share stories and a collection of songs that are an introduction to a broad range of First Nations knowledges. She introduces instruments such as the clapsticks, the Kulap, the Aboriginal flag, the Torres Strait Islander flag, and her nanna’s experience of the Stolen Generations through storytelling and singing. The songs that Jessie shares and teaches are all public songs and can be taught by First Nations and non-Indigenous educators. This workshop is suitable for secondary, primary and EC teachers with follow up resources available.

Jessie is best known for her Mission Songs project that takes audiences on a profoundly moving musical journey. Ailan Songs project is her second major work, an island reggae exploration of historical songs from the Torres Strait.
